Interprofessional Dental Outreach for Adults with Serious Mental Illness

Summary:
This project addresses the need for interprofessional (e.g. interdisciplinary) coordinated oral care for persons affected by serious mental illness. The University of San Francisco Interprofessional Primary Care Outreach for Persons with Mental Illness (IPCOM) coordinates with UCSF pre-doctoral student clinics to provide dental screenings and treatment to residents of seven IPCOM health facilities in San Francisco. Of the patients treated, 59% had decayed teeth, 63% were missing teeth, 100% had some gingival recession, and 33% had moderate-severe periodontal disease.
