Project Description

Organization:
RootDown LA, A Project of Community Partners

Summary:
Building Youth-Driven Neighborhood Food Systems by Root Down LA, in Partnership with Community Partners, provides a structure for engaging students, community organizations, and residents of South Los Angeles in an urban garden initiative that creates important systemic opportunities and partnerships to address key issues around nutrition, food access, education, training, and employment in this low-income community with food deserts. This grass-roots effort, founded by former students from the neighborhood being served, has experienced early success, especially from its 117 youth neighborhood youth leaders who have not only reached thousands of their neighbors with both healthy food education and encouragement, but who have also maximized neighborhood access to affordable, fresh, healthful produce, and urban green space.
